The Science Academies of New York has been informed by the New York State Education Department that we are required to make changes to student access for certain Google Additional Services. This directive comes from the Chief Privacy Officer at NYSED to ensure compliance with Ed Law 2-d, as Google is not able to sign a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) for these additional services.
What’s Changing?
How Will This Affect Students?
What About Staff Accounts?
These changes are part of a statewide effort to ensure compliance with Ed Law 2-d and reinforce the district’s commitment to student data privacy and security. While we understand this may impact some aspects of classroom technology use, we are confident that these adjustments will have minimal disruption to student learning.
SANY Administration

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff, and Stakeholders, the Science Academies of New York will hold a public hearing on the district-wide school safety plan, open to all school personnel, students, and the public.
Please note that the public hearing sessions will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, June 23rd, 2025, at the SANY Conference Center at 1415 W Genesee St, Syracuse, NY.
Your participation is appreciated.

Monday, May 26th, 2025: In observance of Memorial Day, Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School will be closed on Monday, May 26th.
Let us take this time to honor and remember the brave men and women who have served our country.
Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 27th.
Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Charter School recently participated in standard lead testing as part of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) surveillance program. In accordance with current regulations, schools are now required to conduct lead testing every three years (previously every five years ). This testing is not only a compliance measure—it allows us to identify and proactively address any outlets that may need remediation.
As part of this year’s testing in April 2025, 138 water outlets across the building were evaluated. We are pleased to share that all drinking fountains—those actively used by students—tested well below the newly regulated action level of 5 parts per billion (ppb) and are safe for consumption. Through this testing, we identified water outlets - primarily hand washing sinks - located in the restrooms and hand washing stations, which exceeded the newly regulated 5 parts per billion (ppb) lead limit (previously 15 ppb).
We posted clear signage stating “Not for drinking—use for handwashing only” and began preparing a mitigation plan to replace the associated plumbing. We are committed to continued investigation and remediation, including the replacement of any older fixtures and follow-up testing to confirm that all outlets meet safety standards. Our goal is to eliminate any traces of lead and ensure the continued health and safety of all students and staff.
It’s important to note that all student-accessible drinking fountains and bottle-filling stations are safe and remain below the 5 ppb limit.
At Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Charter School, ensuring safety and fostering a conducive learning environment are our top priorities for all of our students. Thank you for your continued support as we maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for all.

Dear SANY Parents and Guardians,
I am reaching out to inform you of a concerning trend circulating on TikTok and other social media platforms that poses significant risks to student and staff safety and school property.
The trend, known as the #ChromebookChallenge or #ChromebookDurabilityTest, encourages students to intentionally insert small metal objects—such as paper clips, pencil leads, metallic wrappers, or pushpins—into Chromebooks' charging ports, USB ports, or internal components. This dangerous act can cause the device to short-circuit, overheat, catch fire, and even explode, which can cause serious injury and substantial damage to the device.
We want to make sure families are aware of the serious consequences of participating in this trend, which may include:
How you can help:
Our top priority is the safety of our students and staff. We are committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment. We appreciate your attention to this matter and your partnership in keeping our students and staff safe.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tolga Hayali
Superintendent of SANY Schools
