Happy Independence Day, Atoms!

Sunday, July 4th, 2021—From our family to yours, we wish all of our Atoms a very happy, healthy and safe Independence Day! Below are some fun facts about the 4th of July.

  • Every July 4th, descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence tap the Liberty Bell 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies.
  • Americans typically eat 150 million hot dogs on Independence Day, “enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. more than five times,” according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
  • The first July 4th celebration took place at the White House on 1801, hosted by Thomas Jefferson.
  • Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is held annually on July 4th. In 2018, champion Joey Chestnut ate 74 hot dogs with buns in just 10 minutes.

Things Get a little Slimy in the 2nd Grade

Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 2nd grade Atoms created their own slime using glue, baking soda and a little saline solution.

Tuesday, June 15th, 2021Dare we say that things got a little ‘slimy’ at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school when the Atoms were left with glue, baking soda and a little saline solution to create their very own slime. For their hands-on, minds-on science experiment, students were tasked with using each of those ingredients to make the perfect slime that had great texture, elasticity, was flexible and of course looked cool - just like the Atoms! Fun, laughter and excitement were had by all with this classic DIY science experiment.

Future Architects Design their Dream Homes

Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school 5th grade Atoms participate in a hands-on, minds-on STEM activity where they design their dream home.

Monday, June 14th, 2021Our house, in the middle of street! Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 5th grade Atoms in Mr. Giangiobbe's class put on their construction hats, grabbed some blueprints, their rulers, straight edges, compasses and calculators for their hands-on, minds-on activity of designing their dream house!

From mansions, to houses, to duplexes and everything in between, these future architects used their mathematical skills of area, perimeter, and spatial graphing and built out and designed their dream home. No home is ever complete without figuring out the budget and how much you would like to spend when it comes to fixing up a home or even designing your own home. The Atoms put their financial skills to work, as well, when they were drawing and designing their homes.

This awesome STEM assignment is one the students will remember for always!
