Saturday, November 9th, 2024: A group of enthusiastic Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School scholars participated in the annual Bridges Challenge at the Museum of Science and Technology (MOST). This event brought together students from various schools across CNY to test their engineering skills by designing and constructing balsa wood bridges. The challenge focused not only on building strength but also on creating structures that could support weight efficiently.
The CSAS Atoms demonstrated their creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork, learning valuable bridge design and construction lessons. Throughout the competition, students received constructive feedback that will help them refine their skills for future engineering projects.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, bonding with their teammates as they worked together to perfect their bridges. The competition provided a unique opportunity for the scholars to engage in hands-on STEM learning while fostering camaraderie and a sense of accomplishment. This event was more than just a competition; it was a chance for our students to grow and build essential skills for the future. The dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm our Atoms showed embody the spirit of innovation and learning.
A special thanks to the teachers and staff who supported the students throughout the preparation and competition process. Let’s continue building bridges to success in STEM and beyond!
Friday, November 8th, 2024: Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School students are working hard designing and building their bridges, for the annual CNY Bridge Challenge this weekend! Good luck to all our teams as they prepare for this exciting STEM competition!
Friday, November 8th, 2024: 5th graders went full STEAM ahead with an exciting guest speaker! Mrs. Hotaling, a Biology Professor at Onondaga Community College and Cayuga Community College, joined us virtually to share her fascinating work on invasive species and their impact on Onondaga County's ecology.
For those who may not know, STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—fields that spark innovation and critical thinking!
Our scholars loved learning about real-world science and asked fantastic questions! Thank you, Mrs. Hotaling, for inspiring curiosity and showing our young learners the incredible possibilities of STEAM. We can't wait to see where these new ideas take them!
Friday, October 11th, 2024: Inspector Gary Butler from the Syracuse Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau visited our second graders to read "No Dragons for Tea." Our Atoms learned valuable fire safety tips and gained insight into how the FPB keeps our community safe through code enforcement, plan reviews, and inspections!
Thank you for visiting, Mr. Butler!
Saturday, October 26th, 2024: Fifteen boys tried out for the Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School boys' modified basketball team, giving it their all through drills, conditioning, and showcasing their basketball skills. Beyond the game, the coach emphasized the importance of teamwork, support, integrity, and character—building these Scholar-Athletes on and off the court!
Tuesday, November 5th, 2024: It’s Election Day, and it's never too early to empower our future voters! Last week, Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School students dove into the Electoral College, examining maps from past elections to understand electoral vs. popular votes.
Then, on November 4th, they tackled real-world issues like healthcare, school safety, and the economy—discussing their impact on Americans today.
To top it off, our Atoms practiced one of the most important civic duties: casting their own votes for a presidential candidate! Building informed, engaged citizens starts now!
Friday, October 25th, 2024: Each October, Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Elementary celebrates our school’s incredible diversity during Heritage Week! Atoms proudly dress in clothing representing their culture, showcasing over 15 different backgrounds and languages. Celebrating diversity and culture in schools like ours is essential because it fosters an environment of inclusion, respect, and understanding among students. Heritage Week highlights our students' unique backgrounds, traditions, and languages and promotes empathy and curiosity.
When students wear clothing from their culture, it’s a chance to share their identities openly, sparking conversations that broaden perspectives and challenge stereotypes. For many, Heritage Week provides a sense of pride and belonging, allowing students to see themselves and their stories reflected in their school community. Recognizing each culture enriches learning experiences, helping students and staff alike appreciate the vibrant tapestry that makes CSAS stronger, more united, and truly representative of the world beyond school walls. These connections encourage acceptance and celebrate the beauty of diversity, setting the foundation for a more inclusive future.
This special day allows everyone to learn and appreciate each other's heritage, strengthening our community even more.
Saturday, October 12th, 2024: Our talented Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse Middle School Atoms competed in the Catapult Competition at the MOST and earned 2nd and 4th place finishes! After weeks of designing, building, and testing their catapults, they were ready to take on the challenge. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our Atoms to demonstrate their skills, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
Congratulations to all the participants! We’re so proud of your hard work, dedication, and passion for STEM.
Friday, September 27th, 2024: Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse middle school scholars saw STEM in action on a field trip to SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
