Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms were recently learning about the Positivity Project’s character strength of creativity. There are many ways and forms for people to find a creative outlet and to express themselves. One of those outlets is through arts and crafts. Combining the character strength of creativity and a lesson about puppets, and a little help from teachers Ms. O’Connor and Ms. Diorio for delivering the supplies, the Atoms are busy at work expressing themselves when making their very own hand puppets.
Tuesday, December 1st, 2020—Mrs. Badman is a teacher who certainly embodies a ‘Positivity in Action’ mindset when it comes to her students and their families. This past week, the students have been learning about the character strength, kindness and how they too can show kindness through their thoughts, words and actions. Leading by example, it's the little things in life that really go above and beyond to express kindness, caring and appreciation. Each day, Mrs. Badman reaches out to her students and their families either through a phone call or a simple text message to show her token of appreciation and that she was thinking of them. This simple gesture goes a long way to build a positive relationship not only with the students but families as well, especially when this year has been challenging for most. Thank you, Mrs. Badman for all that you do for Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms!
Monday, November 30th, 2020—Keeping the health and safety in mind for all, the week after Thanksgiving recess was virtual learning for Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship School. Despite the distance, teachers put their creativity to the test (and with the help of technology, thank you Zoom), were able to connect with their students and share this week’s Positivity Project’s character strength, kindness. We are looking forward to seeing this character strength in action throughout the week.
Friday, November 20th, 2020—Miss Hence’s Kindergarten class thinks outside the box for their math class! Students have recently been practicing, learning and exploring geometric shapes. For one of their activities, students had an opportunity for hands-on learning by creating shapes using a variety of materials. Please head to our Facebook page to view more pictures from this math lesson.
Friday, November 20th, 2020—It is no secret that the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school teachers love, appreciate and care for their students. With families opting for both types of learning models - online and hybrid, it at times is no easy task to create a sense of community inside the classroom. Leave it to the creativity of the teachers in room 1B, Mrs. Kipp and Ms. Mays for thinking outside the box and mailing their students friendship bracelets to let them know they were thinking of them.
Thursday, November 19th, 2020—Many of the teachers, faculty and staff at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship school have gone above and beyond the call of duty this year. We would like to highlight and give thanks to one teacher in particular, Ms. O’Conner. Many of you might know that Ms. O’Conner is our ENL teacher, but what you might not be aware of is how she has helped us continue to build success, one Atom at a time. Ms. O’Conner works behind the scenes helping ensure that our students are successful. From supporting our teachers and students to creating resources for the Atoms so they too can access content wherever their classroom may be. And some days, if not most, it’s Ms. O’Conner’s great sense of humor, positive can-do attitude that radiates when you are around her. Thank you, Ms. O’Conner for all that you have done, and continue to do for our students, faculty and staff.
Friday, November 20th, 2020—Does anyone else have the famous Jeopardy theme song playing in their head now? If not get ready for your next clue. The answer is - What mathematicians used perseverance and critical thinking to show their work while playing a Jeopardy review game for their upcoming Math exam?
Who are, the students in room 4C!
What a creative idea to prepare for an upcoming exam! Keep up the great work, Atoms.
Friday, November 13th, 2020—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship Atoms receive awards fit for kings and queens for all of their ‘Royally Great Work’ they achieved during the first quarter. Teachers mailed the awards to their students and recognized them for their hard work both online and in the classroom. Keep up the great efforts, Atoms.
Thursday, November 12th, 2020—It was only a matter of time before the first grade Atoms in room 1C would suddenly all be in KAHOOTS! By Kahoots, we certainly mean a program that would allow the Atoms to practice their listening and learning skills from their CKLA block. In the program students would solve challenging problems using their listening skills. Keep up the great work, Atoms.
Friday, November 6th, 2020—The classic children’s story, Flat Stanley written by Jeff Brown was the inspiration behind the creative idea of two Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship teachers, Mrs. Kippa and Ms. Mays. Back in October, the two teachers were missing their students terribly and hearing about all their fun adventures they would have outside of school. To help alleviate this and to make the students feel a sense of connection, they sent their Atoms ‘Flat Teachers,’ with a note that read:
Hey There Students!
We’re missing you terribly and thought there maybe some adventures you could share with us. Invite the ‘Flat Teachers’ to join you for your daily routines, like when you play outside, or need a break from your screens. I wish we could be together and we could give you a hug or a high five. But these ‘Flat Teachers’ will have to do for the meantime. Know wherever you go and wherever you play, we will always be your teachers no matter how far away.
Monday, November 16th, 2020—This time of year there is so much to be thankful and grateful for in life. In collaboration with our proud partner, the Positivity Project students, faculty, and staff took time this week to focus on the character trait, gratitude. Atoms reflected on what things, people, items and more are we most grateful for, and wrote them on the school’s Gratitude Tree! We are grateful for all of our students, faculty, teachers, staff and community.
