Saturday, January 27th, 2021—On a chilly Saturday afternoon, Syracuse Academy of Science teachers Mr. G and Mr. McGriff bundled and masked up to go and visit some pretty stellar citizens … the 5th grade Atoms! Students were excited to see their teachers during these home visits. It was a pleasant surprise over the weekend. Check out that positivity in action.

Home visits are one of the key elements in Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship's parent outreach activities. The goal of home visits are to help create a triad of parent-student-teacher relationships. During each home visit, teachers are encouraging parents to take an active role in student's learning at home.

Monday, February 1st, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school welcomed virtual guest speaker, Dale McMillian Jr. as part of its 28 Speakers in 28 Days project. Dale spoke with the students in Mr. Romano’s class and shared valuable insight on the importance of education. Dale also shared with the students that it is important to do well in high school, how to select a college or university that will help you be successful, and shared a story about using the Positivity Project’s character trait of perseverance. Thank you, Dale for taking the time to speak with the Atoms and for being one of our virtual guest speakers for the 28 Speakers in 28 Days project.

Monday, January 25th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school shines its spotlight on 3^rd grade teacher, Mr. Roney. Mr. Roney is a dedicated, positive and passionate teacher who puts his students first. Going above and beyond he strives to ensure each of his Atoms receives the best education possible, and makes sure they and their families have the necessary resources. His positive spirit and can-do attitude radiates throughout the building. To say that we are honored to have him as one of our teachers is an understatement. Thank you, Mr. Roney for all that you do, and continue to do for these students, and your coworkers. Many Atoms, one family!

Monday, February 1st, 2021—Throughout the month of February Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship School will be participating in the 28 Speakers in 28 Days project. Students will have an opportunity to listen to various community leaders, business professionals, students and guest speakers. To kick-off this event, Mrs. Merritt’s class had the pleasure of welcoming its first virtual guest speaker, Syracuse Police Officer, Marlena Jackson. 

Officer Jackson spoke with the students about the importance of helping in the community and building a positive relationship with one another. Thank you, Officer Jackson for taking the time out of your busy schedule to come and speak with the students virtually about being a Syracuse Police Officer! Monday, January 25th, 2021—The Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary Atoms are becoming better and stronger readers every day. Earlier this week the students participated in small breakout reading sessions where they each took turns reading out loud while practicing their reading comprehension skills. We are proud of all that the students have accomplished. Keep up the great work, Atoms you are all becoming excellent readers!

Monday, January 25th, 2021—Earlier this week, Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school was pumped to welcome back its Hybrid learning students. To get the early morning juices flowing for a day filled with learning and knowledge the students participated in a variety of stretches, and aerobic exercise. Welcome back, Atoms!

Monday, January 25th, 2021—The 2^nd grade Atoms at Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship elementary school displayed positivity in Action this morning while in math class. Students have been learning about the Positivity Project’s character strength of perseverance, and not giving up. This morning, Atoms were given a variety of math equations to solve. Students had to use problem solving skills and techniques to answer the questions. We are proud of the Atoms for persevering, not giving up and solving their math equations. Keep up the great work, Atoms!

Friday, January 15th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 3rd Grade Atoms in Mr. Gioia’s 3rd grade class had the opportunity to participate in a week-long virtual Spirit Week! Students could attend their Zoom sessions dressed in the day’s theme attire. The themes throughout the week included: Disney day, superhero day, hat day, pajama day and school color day. What a creative idea for virtual learning!

Wednesday, January 13th, 2021—Anyone can be a teacher. From grandparents, to community leaders, to educators to even the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship 3^rd Grade Atoms. As we all know, the Atoms are very talented. In this most recent challenge, the students were tasked with teaching their teachers something they are passionate about using ‘how to’ language. Friday, January 8th, 2021—The fourth grade Atoms in Mrs. Hebbert’s class recently learned about the Positivity Project’s character strength of Optimism. The students in the class were challenged to share this message with those around them. Twin sisters decided they would create a poster that would proudly be displayed in their community. Their poster listed the ‘7 Rules of Life.’ These rules include the following:

1. Let it Go
2. Be Happy
3. Love All
4. Breathe
5. Stay Calm
6. Smile
7. Give it Time
